In the WICN-FM studio, seated in armchairs, Marvin (center) and Paul take a question from a member of the studio audience.

Host Bonnie Johnson welcomed Paul and Marvin back for another appearance, this time with a live studio audience. The audience asked questions and bought copies of Paul’s biography of Marvin. Paul and Marvin autographed books.

Bonnie, Paul and Marvin discussed Marvin’s early career as a musician and the Western Front, the popular music club Marvin ran in Cambridge for decades. Bonnie pleasantly surprised Marvin by bringing back old friends and performers, including members of the G-Clefs, a doo wop group whose national performances over the decades included appearances at the Western Front. Members of the G-Clefs sang and danced in studio for Marvin, Paul, and the studio audience!

Later, Paul and Marvin discussed what Marvin has done throughout his career to help people recognize and remedy discrimination.

One episode Paul described: A fateful journey Marvin took with basketball star Bill Russell to Mississippi to test enforcement of the then recently enacted Civil Rights Act of 1964. Marvin and Russell spent days in that segregation stronghold being chased and threatened by armed militant segregationists. In Paul’s biography of Marvin, the men’s efforts to elude danger reads like an action-packed thriller.

Paul read excerpts from the book, then described how Marvin’s path in life was influenced by hearing his grandmother describe her experiences as a slave in pre-Civil War Alabama. Marvin became determined to stand up for his family — and for other people. That’s why he joined the Army when he was underage. Paul will describe Marvin’s scary experiences in combat during WWII, and what it was like to be a black G.I. when the Army was still officially segregated. He also described Marvin’s perilous trip to Mississippi with basketball star Bill Russell. Marvin and Russell were repeatedly threatened and attacked by armed segregationists. Paul discussed how Marvin created the Western Front music club — and how Marvin was kidnapped at gunpoint one night.

After the reading, Paul and Marvin signed copies for people who bought the biography.

This was a great opportunity to meet Paul and Marvin, the subject of his recently published book, Marvin Gilmore: Crusader for Freedom.

Paul read an excerpt from the book. He also interviewed Marvin in front of the audience. They discussed such things as what it meant to Marvin as a young boy to learn he was the grandson of slaves, what his scariest moments were in combat during WWII, and Marvin’s difficulties as a black soldier while the Army was still officially segregated. In addition, Paul discussed Marvin’s perilous trip to Mississippi with basketball star Bill Russell. Marvin and Russell moved around Jackson, Miss., protected by armed guards. When they traveled by car, they frequently switched vehicles to elude gun-toting segregationists who tried to ambush them. Paul and Marvin also talked about how Marvin created the Western Front music club.

After Paul’s presentation, members of an audience that grew throughout the presentation purchased Paul’s book and got autographs from Paul and Marvin.

Bonnie Johnson’s “Colors of Jazz”
90.5 FM, WICN Public Radio (Worcester, Mass.)
• Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014

Host Bonnie Johnson interviewed Paul and Marvin, exploring Marvin’s early career as a musician and his later founding of the popular Western Front music club in Cambridge.

The show was the week of Veterans’ Day, so Paul discussed how Marvin joined the Army during WWII and his experiences combating discrimination inside the Army as well as combating Germany’s ideology of racial and religious hatred.

Marvin’s hometown recruitment officer had promised to assign him to a jazz band. But the promise was just a ruse to get Marvin into a uniform. Instead, Marvin ended up in ferocious front-line warfare. Paul described how Marvin miraculously got transferred to a music school in Scotland just when he thought he was doomed to die in combat inside Germany.

Paul and Marvin talked about the role that music has played throughout his career.

Rebuilding Your 401(k) Account
Barnes & Noble, Derby Mall, Hingham, MA (map)
• Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010

Worried about how your 401(k) account shriveled in the 2008-2009 stock market meltdown? You can do something about it! Paul Katzeff discussed strategies for beefing up your retirement account — and he did it in plain English — when he appeared at the Barnes & Noble on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Comeback strategies are the subject of Katzeff’s newly published book, Getting Started In Rebuilding Your 401(k) Account. This is Katzeff’s third book about how to make the most of your 401(k) account, even in difficult economic times.

His books avoid Wall Street jargon. Instead, they are written in a popular, easy-to-read style.

I write for real people on Main Street,” Katzeff said. “I write for 25-year-olds who are starting their first job. I write for 55-year-olds who are wondering how they will finance retirement. My books are aimed at everyone from home-makers to dentists, single moms, single dads, brain surgeons, and plumbers. I write for all the people who are busy with jobs, homes, and families.”

Rebuilding Your 401(k) Account book cover

Katzeff’s latest book about rebuilding 401(k) accounts includes sections designed for people who are good at running their own portfolio. “But the bulk of the book is for people who have little if any experience with investing or with 401(k) accounts,” Katzeff said.

The plunging stock market in 2008 and 2009 wiped out a lot of value in 401(k) accounts. Katzeff said, “It scared people. Now the question is what’s the best way to fight back?”

During the market crash, many people sold all of the mutual funds in their 401(k) accounts and put the proceeds into cash. Katzeff will discuss the pros and cons of that strategy and others. His topics will include:

  • Ways to rebuild your account after the market tumbles
  • How to invest during the next market decline
  • Choosing a target-date mutual fund that custom-tailors its investments to your retirement date
  • Dodging the danger of shifting from stock mutual funds to bond funds or cash
  • When to use a Roth 401(k) instead of a traditional 401(k)
  • Ways for self-employed entrepreneurs to use special solo 401(k) plans
  • Deciding how much you can withdraw each year without running out of money
  • Taking advantage of most plans’ equivalent of a free pay raise

Katzeff talked about 401(k) recovery strategies. He also conducted a question-and-answer session and signed books.
